How to connect two computers with a USB Cable

One of the best and fastest ways for connecting two computers is by using a USB-USB cable. This process allows you to transfer files from one computer to another and share internet connection. The specific usb cable for connecting two computers is “Bridged”. Please note this might not work with cable other than “Bridged” or USB networking cable.

Two ways for Operating this cable are:-

Link Mode

The link mode function is the simplest way to select and drag files to or from the remote computer.

Network mode

To enable this function, you will have to create a network between the specific computers which will then allow you to share folders and internet access. This function mode fits well for sharing printers located on other computers and specifically for internet access.
Cable installation

To enable connection between the two computers, you should insert the CD-ROM installation of drivers and program that come with the USB-USB cable in both computers. It might happened that both drivers (network and link mode) are in a selected mode which you however you need to choose.

After installation, you can then install the cable on the cable which shall be recognized by windows. Windows will then install the correct drivers.

Flash Drive Japanese GhostRadar

Japanese has always found ways to associate stuff in real-life with USB flash drive. The most notable examples are the USB Sushi and USB Dimsim. While the plastic food has no real correlation with functionality of the USB flash drive, it serves to jump-start sales, and it did the job well.

Now, SolidAlliance has come up with a GhostRadar USB flash memory that detects, well, ghosts. Basically, it responds to unusual magnetic waves with audible alerts and flashing red lights. This thing maybe useful for paranoid travelers who stay in all kinds of hotel rooms and need to check them out. Unfortunately, the GhostRadar doesn't record unusual activities in the USB flash memory.

When Your Computer Won't Recognize Your Flash Drive

If your Windows XP computer is not recognizing your flash drive, its likely that you computer simply is confused as to what drive letter to assign to the memory stick. Fortunately, the fix is a simple one. This trick also works when your computer refuses to recognize a USB drive or other removable storage device.

First, hit Windows+E to open an Explorer window.

Select “My Computer.”

Right click and choose “Manage” from the contextual menu. This will open a window called “Computer Management.”

Select “Disk Management”, which is under “Storage”

On the bottom right side of the window, you’ll see a list of all of the storage devices currently attached to the computer. If your flash drive is listed there, that’s great—you can fix the problem. If not, this solution won’t work.

Right click on the drive listed in that window. This will bring up a contextual menu. Choose “Change Drive Letter and Paths.”

This will bring up yet another window, which will show your “missing” drive. Choose “Change” at the bottom.

Another window will pop up. This one will have a drop down menu on the right hand side. Choose a letter “higher” than the one currently assigned to the drive. If it’s “E”, for example, choose a letter between “F” and “Z.” Its probably best to pick one toward the end of the alphabet.

Once you’ve selected a drive letter, a warning message will come up saying that “Changing The Drive Letter of a Volume Might Cause Programs No Longer To run.”

That’s OK. It’s likely that all you’ve got on the drive is data. Click on Yes.

That will return you to the Computer Management Window.

Your drive now should function properly.

A Directory Of Programs Designed For USB Drives

Update: Nov 28, 2006... Alan in the comments tells me of Pstart, "a simple tray tool to start user defined applications. Designed to run portable applications (like portable Firefox & Thunderbird), you can start anything runnable from USB key devices or removable disks."

Please keep the suggestions coming, either via the comments or by emailing me directly (link on the left). Comments will be trawled and suggestions added.

Here’s a directory of applications designed to run on USB drives, flash drives, key fobs, thumb drives, whatever you want to call them, a subject I wrote about in the AWSJ and WSJ.com (subscription required; sorry). This doesn't claim to be an exhaustive list, but I've tried to keep it as up to date as possible.
